The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday examined the debate concerning the benefits and risks associated with universal screening of pregnant women for genital herpes (Armstrong, Wall Street Journal, 12/13). Genital herpes is a treatable but incurable disease. Women with active herpes usually undergo caesarean-section deliveries to prevent transmitting the virus to their infants during delivery because genital herpes can be fatal for infants.
